Overview for Week 2
- Overview of UF Research Computing and HiPerGator
- Getting started on the Linux command line
What’s due by the end of the week?
- The GitHub Account assignment is due Tuesday, August 27.
- Quiz 1 will be available on Monday. It is due Wednesday, September 11.
- It covers basic Linux commands like:
pwd, cd, ls, less, cp, mv, mkdir, rm, which, man, cat, sort, uniq, wc, head, tail, echo, history, grep, cut, paste, join, diff, tr, sed
- Problem Set 1 will be available on Friday. It is due Monday, September 16.
- Covers regular expressions in text editors and with
grep
as well as some of the Linux commands from weeks 1 & 2.
For Monday
- If you haven't already done this, be sure to follow the directions on the software download page.
- You will likely want at least VSCode on your computer.
For Wednesday

- Building Command Line skills
- Work on the exercises here. This is not graded, but should help you practice.
By the end of this week you should
- Have a github.com account
- Understand the basics of Linux filesystems and where to store your data on HiPerGator.
- Be able to use the following Linux commands:
pwd, cd, ls, less, cp, mv, mkdir, rm, which, man, cat, sort, uniq, wc, head, tail, echo, history
.
- Understand command arguments to modify how commands function.
- Be able to use redirect output to a file (
>, >>
).
- Be able to link commands with pipes (
|
).
